01/05/2012 Study Day - The Oxytocin Factor: Tapping the Hormone of Calm, Love and Healing
In recent years there have been exciting scientific discoveries about a hormone whose amazing role in the human body has long been neglected. Oxytocin is the powerful hormone involved in bonding, sex, and childbirth, as well as in relaxation and feelings of calm. It is the mirror image of the stress hormone adrenaline, which triggers the 'fight or flight' systems in the body. Much has been written about the latter, but the many-sided importance of oxytocin is at this point known only to those working in obstetrics and physiology and to some psychiatrists.
This study day will reveal the importance of the whole oxytocin system for a general audience. Both the new research findings and the potentially beneficial applications of this hormone in reducing anxiety states, stress, addictions, and problems of childbirth are fascinating and of great significance in all our lives.
This day will be of benefit to anyone working with people and who would like to understand more about the benefits of touch and how to increase oxytocin levels for the body to be calm, to feel connected to others and to heal itself. Yoga teachers, school teachers, acupuncturists, reflexologists, massage therapists, doulas, midwives, antenatal teachers, psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors, nurses…. EVERYONE!
Kerstin Uvnäs Moberg, M.D., Ph.D., is recognized as a world authority on oxytocin. Her research takes place at the famed Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, where she is Professor of Physiology.
The author of more than 400 scientific papers and a previous book, She and He, Dr. Uvnäs Moberg lectures widely in Europe and the United States. Her work has been influential in a variety of fields, including obstetrics, psychology, animal husbandry, physical therapy, pediatrics, and child development.
The mother of four children, she lives in Djursholm, Sweden.
