Doula UK welcomes pledged maternity service improvements

"Doula UK welcomes news today of the government's pledge to offer women a named midwife to care for them during pregnancy and the postnatal period and a commitment to one-to-one care during labour and birth.

Research clearly indicates the many benefits of one-to-one midwifery care; not only in reducing instances of postnatal depression but in decreasing the rates of serious medical interventions.

Our members and the families they support during birth and the postnatal period, are only too aware of the positive impact that the care from a named midwife can have and the negative consequences of fragmented care that so many currently receive.

The challenges of altering the current system will be significant and the hope is that women, midwives and organisations like Doula UK, who see the profound effect that models of care can have on individuals, will be consulted on how to build a system that really works to support women and their families during the childbearing year."
