Doula UK

Doula Access Fund

Doula UK has a budget to cover expenses incurred by doulas who work for clients in their local community, who do not have the means to employ a doula.  This might be because the family’s only income is from State benefits.

If you would like assistance from a birth or postnatal doula and feel you may be eligible to access this Fund, please accessfund [at] doula [dot] org [dot] uk (get in touch with our Doula Access Fund administrator, Lisa Sykes by email) or telephone - 07886 839368 and she will be able to assist you with any queries you may have and help you to find a doula that is willing to donate her time. . . . read more

About Doula UK

Doula UK is a network of doulas run voluntarily by doulas.

The network started in February 2001 and is a non-profitmaking organisation.

Our aims are to promote the role of doulas, to improve communication between doulas, and to advance our understanding of birth and the postnatal period. Our network has a Philosophy, sets standards and has a Code of Conduct which all members adhere to.

We are governed by our Memorandum and Articles of Association (see downloads at bottom of this page). At the beginning of 2004, we introduced a "Recognition Process" for doulas in the UK where we have established a distinction between doulas who have simply registered with us, and those who are "recognised" as having attained a particular level of learned skills and experience. We also have a Complaints Procedure, which amongst other things, allows us to audit our membership and maintain good practice. . . . read more

Doula UK Code of Conduct

A Doula who is a member of the Doula UK network:

  • Is accountable for her own practice in whatever environment she chooses to work. In all circumstances the safety and welfare of the mother and baby must be of primary importance.

Doula UK Philosophy

Doula UK is a network of doulas. We believe that all women should have the opportunity to be a doula, and should have access to the services of one. In the past it was more common for a sister, mother, grandmother, aunt to help a new mother on her journey. These women were not trained, but experienced in life and offered nurturing and support. In the same way, a doula's support comes directly from the heart and wisdom of that individual. . . . read more
