Hi, my name is Grace Collins, I am a birth and postnatal doula living in Reading, Berkshire, with my husband and two children. I seriously started considering becoming a doula after the birth of my second son and then went on to train with Nurturing Birth in 2012.
My two births were very different. I had an emergency caesarean with my first and a VBAC with my second.
The way my first birth unfolded made me question so many things about my own beliefs about birth and my body’s ability to birth my baby and I longed for an empowering birth the second time around. Thankfully I was able to achieve that with the support of my doula. My births left me with a strong desire to support and nurture other women during pregnancy, birth and the early weeks following birth.
I am interested in all things birth related, particularly gentle and traditional ways of handling birth. I am a breastfeeding helper and also volunteer at a local breastfeeding support group. Together with an antenatal yoga teacher friend, I co-facilitate the Positive Birth Group in the Reading area. Other than that I enjoy spending time with my kids, permaculture, travelling, yoga, meditation, reading and music.
I believe in every woman’s right to have an empowering and dignified birth. I, therefore strive to be there for my clients in ways that empower them to feel supported and encouraged throughout their birth and in the early days after birth. I will stay with my clients in labour from the time they want me to until mother and baby are settled and baby is happily feeding.
We may meet two or three times before the birth. Together we will talk through anything that is playing on my client’s mind regarding birth. We will talk about birth preferences and work on preparing a birth plan. My aim is always be to support my clients to feel informed, and empowered in their birth experiences. I will be on call from two weeks before the estimated due date until the baby is born. Please get in touch if you would like more details.
