Birth and postnatal Support in breast/bottle feeding Holistic massage and counselling skills experience in home birth, hospital birth, water birth,
I originally trained to be a doula in 1993 and also trained to be a breastfeeding counsellor with La Leche League. I attended the births of friends’ children at that time, but chose not make a commitment to work professionally as a doula while my own children were young. As my own children grew my interests branched out into more general fields of human potential and I trained in mediation and counselling. I have worked as a massage therapist and a portrait artist, and have worked in community mediation and market research. I retrained as a doula after supporting the gentle waterbirthbirth of my first grandchild. I have also trained as a breast-feeding counsellor.
I feel passionate about birth and mothering and how it can be a wonderfully enriching experience in a woman’s life and in the growth of a family, especially if a woman is supported in the way she chooses; she is far more able to feel empowered by the experience, and far more able to be the mother she wants to be. I have three grown children of my own. It was only after having a long, exhausting painful labour with my first child that I realised how important it could be to have good support at that vulnerable time; someone who can offer emotional support and who also has knowledge and experience of the birth process. Each birth is unique. There is a certain amount of preparation that can be done, but ultimately birth is unpredictable. My philosophy is to be open to whatever circumstances present themselves and to help you to work with them to support the natural process. It is important that a woman chooses a place to give birth where she feels safe – for some this is hospital and for some it is home. Scientific studies have shown that if a woman is listened to and given the right sort of support; the sort of support that she can get from a doula, she is more likely to be able to deliver her baby without using pain relief or needing other interventions, and is far more likely to feel positively about the experience. Please feel free to ring me. It is really important that you find a doula that you feel comfortable with and I am happy to arrange a no-obligation meeting with you and your birth partner to discuss how we could work together.
