I am also a Celebrant and offer bespoke Mother Blessings, Baby Namings, Closing Ceremonies, Handfastings & Weddings. I am happy to lend pregnancy and birth books from my library out to clients. I have good local networks in pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. I co-run Monmouthshire's Birth Group with other birth workers and am an experienced Breastfeeding Counsellor. Just ask and I will signpost you.
I am passionate about supporting women to have the best possible birth for themselves, their babies and their partners. Experienced at supporting women with home birth, VBAC birth, hospital birth, induction, emergency caesarean birth and water birth, I believe wholeheartedly that our bodies are the result of millions of years of birthing evolution.
I recognise that you have your own unique birth journey to make and provide information so you can make your own choices. I am comfortable with the stories of my own babies births. This means that I have no investment in needing your birth to be a certain way in order to heal my own story. I am happy to support you at home or in hospital.
I have a comprehensive knowledge of pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding and have been offering informal support, information and advocacy to women for almost twelve years now. I attended my first birth in 2013. I completed my formal Doula training course with Conscious Birthing in Autumn 2015. When my children were young I volunteered with the NCT and was Chair of Bristol branch. For several years I co-ran Monmouthshire’s Birth Group, which is a free independent support group, along with other antenatal workers. I have excellent links with other pregnancy and birth workers, both locally and across the UK.
I am a mother of three children who were all born in water at home and breastfed for several years. I am also step-mother to a grown-up child. I used cloth nappies, wore my babies in slings, did baby-led weaning and co-slept. My journey was not always plain sailing, but I am grateful for its gifts and lessons.
There is so much work we can do together to prepare for your baby’s birth! We cannot foresee every eventuality, but it really does help to have done some solid research, preparation and groundwork. I enable women (and their partners) to work through issues from previous births and from their own births, using a variety of techniques. I have a good selection of birth books and other resources which I am happy to lend out to help you in your processing. I am experienced in helping women create their own bespoke birth preferences for several birth scenarios.
I am a great believer in the magic of breastfeeding. Not only is it the perfect food for babies, but also gives immeasurable comfort and solace. It is also a fantastic way to help heal a difficult birth for the mama and to establish a beautiful bond. I was a Breastfeeding Counsellor with a national breastfeeding organisation and ran a twice monthly support group in Monmouth. I have now retired from this but have not lost my touch!
I honour the whole journey of womanhood from menarche, through menstruation, pregnancy, birth, infertility, choosing to be child-free to menopause and beyond. I write about these subjects, create songs, hold ceremonies, workshops and events, which enable women to explore and claim this terrain.
I have a humble approach to being a doula. I always aim to support your partner (if you have one) to bring you closer, so that you can lovingly birth your baby together, if this is what you want. I will take a step back if you are managing brilliantly and don’t need any extra help. I will be there, quietly in the background, fetching water and massage oils, whispering soft words of encouragement and keeping the faith that you can do this! Equally I am happy to be there with you for every single surge, holding you and massaging you, if this is what you want and what is needed.
– I will willingly honour your placenta, however you wish to do this.
– I have an excellent working knowledge of classical homeopathy as I followed a training course for three years, if this is desired.
– I have a good working knowledge of using rebozo, acupressure and Optimal Foetal Positioning assist your labour and birth
I wholeheartedly believe in the value of a fourth trimester – the three months after the birth where a baby and mother are supported to stay as close as possible. This is a key time for your partner too, to adjust to his/her new role. Having a doula around can really help. I specialise in:
– Listening to you and supporting you in your mothering journey.
– Breastfeeding support (including tandem feeding)
– Supporting you with baby-wearing/cloth nappies/co-sleeping
– Playing with toddlers
– Light housework
– Nutritious vegetarian cooking
– Tidying up
Whatever needs to be done, I am happy to do it!
