Aromatherapy in childbirth
Hello my name is Linda and I’m a mentored birth and postnatal doula and have a background in midwifery. I am also a mother and a grandmother and love nothing more than cooking for and spending time with my children and grandchildren.
It was when I was supporting my daughter-in-law and son during the birth of their first baby and my first grandchild that the idea to become a doula grew. The time and support that I was able to give them compared to the support I could offer as a midwife was far greater. Without the constraints of note taking, monitoring and trying to balance too many tasks at once I was able to do the job that I originally became a midwife to do. To care, support and listen, to be totally present in body and in mind and above all to get to know the family before sharing their most intimate journey.
Because of my midwifery background I can also offer a vast amount of knowledge and can act to demystify jargon often used by health professionals without thinking. This often happens during times of high stress and I can be there to explain the situation in plain language so that they may understand and decide what is best for them and their baby. Above all having a doula present at a birth has been shown to reduce the use of pain management, reduce interventions such as instrumental birth and caesarean sections. It has also been shown to increase women’s birth satisfaction.
I also have a particular interest in birth preparation sessions as I believe that knowledge is power. These sessions can be carried out in the comfort of your own home at your convenience. During these sessions I can get to know you and your partner and you can get to know me! I can offer practical tips and information regarding birth physiology, what to expect and how to plan for the birth. I believe that it is also vitally important that partners receive this information as they can often feel excluded from these discussions. You have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you like no matter what. Having worked within midwifery research for the past 8 years I can also provide the latest evidence-based knowledge.
As a birth doula I will be there throughout your birth to support you and your partner as a calming influence, a familiar face, a hand to hold, someone to hold a safe space and help you focus. I have just completed an Aromatherapy for Childbirth course so can also offer aromatherapy in labour if desired. I am not there to replace your partner but to help you work together as a team and to support you both with however you wish to birth your baby. I will stay on to assist with the first feed and to ensure you are comfortable.
Coming home with your new baby can be one of the most exciting but also challenging times of becoming a parent. It is an important time for you to get to know your baby and settle into some kind of routine. A doula can be invaluable at this time to help you through these first few days and weeks to offer a friendly face and a listening ear.
During my postnatal doula role my visits will be tailored to your needs and will include de-briefing and discussions surrounding your birth if required. Reassurance that all is well and assistance with getting breast or bottle feeding established and the time needed for you to get to spend with and get to know your baby whilst I help with meals and light housework. I will also be there for you to grab a bath or shower, to pop to the shops for you or to signpost you to who you might need to contact should your require further assistance with anything.
Please contact me for a chat – I look forward to hearing from you.
