I live in Balham, near Tooting Common, with my husband and two children. They were both born at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2001 and 2004. I experienced two very different births; the first a very empowering natural birth, the second an induction at 37 weeks…… not what I had planned! I was supported at each birth by a wonderful doula who provided constant support and encouragement for my husband and I. Having two such different experiences highlighted just how unpredictable birth can be and how invaluable it was having someone there to guide and support us throughout our labour and birth. This inspired me to become a doula myself.
Originally a nurse I trained as a reflexologist 25 years ago. In 2005 I trained with Dr Gowrie Motha as a Gentle Birth Practitioner. Following this I began working with pregnant women preparing them for the labour and birth using reflexology and massage. My clients then started asking me to attend their births which I did and this led onto training as a doula. From 2012-2013, I worked as one of the first NHS Doulas at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in the Birth Centre. In 2013 I trained as Natal Hypnotherapy Practitioner and now also teach hypnobirthing workshops from home.
Having a baby is an exciting, life changing event. It’s something that you will remember for the rest of your life. Every woman deserves to have a positive birth experience however she chooses to give birth. As mammals we know how to give birth instinctively. Given the right environment and support where a woman feels safe, relaxed and calm she can achieve this.
I work with you during your pregnancy supporting you and preparing you for the birth of your baby. I get to know you and understand how I can best support you and your partner. We discuss any hopes and fears you may have and how you would like to give birth. When you go into labour I stay with you throughout, helping create a calm, quiet environment where you feel safe. I support you however you wish to give birth. Once your baby is born I help you with breast feeding. A few days later I visit you at home and support you in those early days of parenthood.
