Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my profile.
My name is Mel, I live in Epsom Surrey with my husband and 5 daughters with an age range of 19 down to 3. Aside from the chaos a large family brings (its my chaos and I certainly wouldn’t change it) we also have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 rabbits and a horse, if I’m not busy with the children or animals of the house then I enjoy time cooking, baking and reading for both pleasure and knowledge.
Before I became a mother I just had no direction in life and had tried out many differing jobs, never quite finding my niche. After the birth of my first daughter which really was a life changing experience for a number of reasons, I realised that there were a number of people working in hospitals that showed very little care, this I found really hard to comprehend and felt I could make a difference as I genuinely cared. This led me into nursing and for a number of years I worked in Gynaecology on a ward and then went out into the community as part of the district nursing team. I left nursing following the birth of my fourth child, so when returning to work became an option I found a job as a Matron of a boarding house at a boarding school. This in essence was mothering 70 full time boarders and a 120 day boarding students.
Becoming a Doula has been something I have wanted to do for a number of years but put off taking the leap.
My feelings surrounding birth have always been passionate and held strong feelings for me, I became involved with the PBM (Positive Birth Movement) as a facilitator and joined my local hospitals MSLC (Maternity Services Liaison Committee) this confirmed that my thoughts, knowledge and feelings really did fit and they could have an impact in a positive way to benefit others. I’d often seen the look of shock on peoples faces when I have said “I love giving birth” and never understood why, I now know this stems from the current culture surrounding childbirth that is, fear, lack of support in choices being made and the importance of continuity of support needed by mothers and their families during their journey to parenthood.
As a Doula I believe that feeling safe, supported, appreciated, understood and valued as the key decision maker will have a profound effect on birthing experiences and leave many more families with the beautiful warm fuzzy feelings of birth that everyone deserves to have.
How I can help
Childbirth without doubt transforms lives forever, therefore it must be the best birth possible! In order to achieve this a mother and her family needs to feel safe, supported, valued, listened to and empowered to make decisions surrounding her pregnancy and the parenting journey that is without judgement and based on secure knowledge.
My only agenda is to help mothers and their family feel that they were at the forefront of their birth experience. Childbirth is a beautiful, empowering and a breath taking experience, the power of a woman giving birth to her baby never ceases to amaze me, she deserves to feel like the goddess in her birthing space.
