About Me

I’m a mum of four, a grandmother of one lovely redhead and I’ve been involved in the birth world in one way or another since my eldest daughter was born 34 years ago. I’ve had experience of 26 births including inductions, elective and emergency caesareans,  and 4 beautiful home births.  I’ve worked as a family support worker until very recently and volunteered with both Homestart and Surestart in my long career with young families, so I’m well aware of the pressures and concerns that parents experience, both before and after their family is born. Things are so difficult for pregnant women nowadays, as information and advice becomes more and more concerned with risk avoidance. While I believe a woman knows what is best for herself and her baby, I find that she often needs the professional support of someone answerable only to her, and not to hospital guidelines or timeframes, to ensure her wishes and preferences are taken into account.  I really enjoy getting to know the families antenatally, and learning exactly what their wishes and hopes are, while making sure that they are as informed and in control as possible.  My special interest is in home birthing as I have seen a real difference in power and control when women birth within their own four walls, where their partner is genuinely involved and effective, and they are not surrounded by strangers, charts, clipboards and medical equipment.  I have qualified as a hypnobirthing coach with KG Hypnobirthing as I have found this really effective in helping women overcome their fears and reduce the discomfort of childbirth significantly. I’m also qualified to use aromatherapy to enhance the birth experience and promote calm and confidence in the birthing person.
