I will consider travelling any distance, should you feel that I am the right doula for you as an individual.
Complementary therapist,a reflexologist and aromatherapist, preparation for birth, antenatal education and support. I also have 30 years of experience as a midwife within the NHS, which inevitably I draw upon, in my current role as a doula.
Hello, I’m Sarah, and I am a recognised doula, living in Henley-on-thames, Oxfordshire.
I became a doula after having taken a wonderful preparation course with Developing Doulas.
I have been a practising midwife for almost thirty years, and have now relinquished my registration in order to be the most flexible and effective doula possible, meeting the needs of each individual woman, and those who surround her.
I have cared for many hundreds of women throughout pregnancy and labour, and postnatally, each one being totally individual and unique.
I trained as a nurse initially, always with the intention of following my passion for pregnancy and birth into midwifery.
In recent years, I trained in the complementary therapies of aromatherapy, and reflexology. I did this with the support of the NHS, in order to provide extra support and an improved birth experience, for women . I have now taken a step back from midwifery, and am continuing in my vocation, but as a doula; which will allow me to dedicate myself totally, to the physical and emotional support of women, in pregnancy, birth and beyond.
It is a huge privilege to be able to offer to walk with women and their families, on this wonderful journey. To be a guide and support through the maze of information, decision making and choices, and the sifting out of fact from fiction.
It is also an immense privilege to be an advocate, supporter and friend, at every step of the way.
The role of a doula is to create a sense of security, space and safety; guiding and informing, whilst allowing and encouraging women to make their own informed choices in their own time.
What greater reward could there be for a doula, than to have enabled women to achieve a relaxed, enjoyable pregnancy and a gentle, calm birth, whatever the type of birth.
Having the support of a doula increases the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth, and increases the satisfaction of the birth experience.
There is less use of drugs to enhance labour, and a decrease in the use of potent analgesia, such as epidural, pethidine or morphine.
There is also a decrease in the risk of caesarian section, and a decrease in the likelihood of admission to special care neonatal unit.
Having a doula with you, may give you confidence, reduce anxiety, improve self esteem, and ultimately, smooth the pathway of pregnancy, and birth. It is advisable to meet with several doulas, to find the one that feels right for you, doulas generally do not charge for this meeting.
