A Doula Access Fund doula provides continuous emotional and physical support during labour and birth, this is particularly impactful to the majority of applicants to the Doula Access Fund who are facing the trauma of giving birth alone. Practical support during labour may include offering massage, relaxation, breathing and positioning techniques to increase her comfort. Emotional support may take the form of giving encouragement, listening to the woman’s hopes or concerns and creating an optimal birthing environment which is respectful and peaceful. Doulas do not give clinical advice but work professionally alongside midwives and doctors. Once the baby is born the doula can assist with skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding at birth.
The Doula Access Fund also offers postnatal support usually in the first six weeks of a baby’s life. The doula will visit the new family at home, give breastfeeding support, offer practical help with the baby and around the home and also check in emotionally with the new parent or parents. Doulas can link new families to free services in the area such as baby groups and postnatal depression services.
