Alexie Cottam

Mentored Birth Doula

Your East London doula, ready to walk alongside you during this incredible, transformative journey. I understand that pregnancy, birth, and the transition to parenthood can be a whirlwind of emotions – both exhilarating and, at times, overwhelming. You and your birth partners don't have to do this alone... together, we'll build your confidence and prepare you not only for the birth itself but also for the beautiful adventure of parenthood. I'm here to create a safe and nurturing space for you and your family. My passion lies in empowering you to embrace a calm, informed, and positive birth experience. I'd be honoured to support you. Let me introduce myself..

About me

Hi, I'm Lexie! My journey to becoming a doula began with my own transformative birth experience where I discovered the profound beauty and power of bringing a child into the world. However, my birth didn't quite unfold as I'd envisioned, which ignited a deep passion within me to support other families. I experienced first hand the invaluable difference that knowledgeable and compassionate support can make during pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

So, leaving behind a career in the fast-paced world of fashion marketing, I followed my heart and found my true calling in doula work. You can trust that my background in marketing has equipped me with essential skills: clear and effective communication, and the ability to remain calm and assertive, even in high-pressure situations. I'm here to advocate for you and create a supportive environment where you can feel safe and empowered.

I really love doula work but it’s not my only passion in life. I live in Hackney with my partner and son, (so I’m clued up on the local parenting scene and resources) and you’ll find me with my family at the weekends in one of our many local outdoor spaces, or at a crochet class, which is my new hobby.

My training and experience

After training with Side by Side Doulas, I’m a certified and mentored Doula, and trained breastfeeding peer supporter. I also volunteer as a community Doula at Homerton hospital where I support women from Global Majority communities with a range of different birth experiences from vaginal births to inductions and planned caesareans.

My services include…

  • Pre-natal preparation sessions
  • Continuous labour support
  • Postnatal support (including breastfeeding support)

My Philosophy Of Care

I believe that every birth is unique and special, and should be honoured as such. My compassionate yet pragmatic approach is centred on providing personalised support that meets the individual needs of each family. I prioritise creating a calm and supportive environment, where families can feel empowered to make informed decisions about their birth experience (even on the occasions that things aren’t going fully to plan), safe in the knowledge they have all the information they need to make the right choices for themselves and their baby, whatever the circumstances.

I believe the best approach can be a fine balance of pragmatism, intuition and spiritual guidance - all dependent on what’s best for each individual and situation. I believe there is a time and place for both medical intervention in a hospital environment, as well as natural homebirths, and I will walk alongside you as you make these decisions.

I will be a friendly smiling face, a calming force, who will advocate for you and make sure that you have all the evidence-based information you need. Whilst also supporting you emotionally, holding your hand (literally and figuratively) and rubbing your back.

What I’ll offer you as your Doula…

A Personalised Approach

Every birth is unique, and so is my approach. I will meet with you and any birth partners two or three times to truly get to know each other and ensure that you feel comfortable with me. We'll work together on a birth plan that reflects your desires and preferences so we’re fully aligned and prepared.

Evidence-based information

I can’t assure you that you’ll have the perfect birth or that everything will go exactly as you’d planned. But I can assure you that I’ll provide you with the evidence-based information about pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care you need to mitigate risks and remove doubts, boosting your confidence and positivity to help you make informed decisions.

Emotional Support

Throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period, I'll be your listening ear, offering encouragement and reassurance and ensuring you’re prepared both mentally and emotionally. I’ll be on hand to help you navigate your choices, answer your questions, and address any anxieties you might have - or just be there for you to vent to if you’re having a tough day!

Advocacy & Birth Partner Support

During labour and delivery, I'll be your constant companion, advocating for your wishes and making you as comfortable as possible. I will champion your wishes and desires to your healthcare providers, ensuring that your voice is heard. If you're having any birthing partners, I’ll also be there to support them, so they can fully focus on being present with you. I'm not trying to replace the role of a birth partner, but enhance the experience for you both.

Holistic Birth Approach

I believe all births - whether they are vaginal or caesarean, hospital or home births - are a beautiful process, and can benefit from a holistic approach. Comfort and relaxation are key, so I’ll guide you through various techniques for relaxation and provide movement suggestions to help you manage discomfort and navigate labour.

Postnatal Support

Of course, the transition to parenthood is a beautiful blessing, but it’s also okay to say if you’re overwhelmed. Our journey together doesn’t end when you’ve given birth. I’ll be there for you in those early days to help you adjust to your new role, offering emotional and physical support, as well as practical guidance with breastfeeding or newborn care. Whilst your first priorities are your baby and healing, my first priority is you. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

"Lexie played a crucial role in turning the birth of our first baby into a magical experience. Thanks to her we were able to focus on each other without being distracted by the logistical aspects or the fear of the unknown. She made sure we felt empowered, supported and happy. Lexie is an honest, dedicated professional who we were lucky to have by our side. We really felt supported by her as she kept all her attention directed on us from the moment we notified her of labour having started: she was immediately responsive through text and phone and when the time came for her to come over she arrived prepared, with all equipment necessary and a sense of calm and expertise that we found really comforting.
Whilst she was very much involved during the hours spent labouring at home, her presence never felt overbearing or intrusive on our intimacy. She somehow managed to give us space to experience this unique moment as a couple whilst being there to relieve, reassure, guide and support us throughout."
Diane, June 2025

"Whilst I was not initially convinced of the added value of having a doula from the partner’s perspective (my thoughts were that it would be first and foremost helpful for Diane, not me, the experience we had with Alexie showed me that I was better equipped to support Diane by virtue of having employed a doula. I would therefore be happy to recommend Alexie’s services to any partner who may have shared my initial apprehensions.”
Alex, June 2025

"We had immediate rapport with Lexie and she came across as kind and straightforward, with an approach that felt aligned to the way we were thinking about our birth. She spoke about the evidence which supported her approach and also was flexible to our needs given we were arranging a doula quite late in pregnancy.  Lexie was also confident and clear in her communication which helped us at a time when we had a lot of overwhelm with decisions and planning. Lexie gave us remote support during the early stages of my labour which was very valuable as we were stuck on the induction ward with no available midwives. On arrival to the hospital, Lexie helped me with breathing, massage and emotional support. This enabled Tom to advocate and push for a space in the labour ward. During active labour, Lexie was a calming influence in a stressful situation. Focusing on me with all the madness/poor care during the labour and helping us keep calm. Post birth, Lexie was there to support as we tried to reconcile the whole process. She gave me time to recover and rest by looking after Frank and helping with practical tasks, as well as helping us set up a pumping/sleep schedule. She quickly recognised the need for further help with feeding due to a suspected tongue tie and connected us with a lactation consultant. She regularly checked in on how it was going and was available if required. Lexie listened to us and helped us process what had happened during the birth, encouraging us to schedule a birth reflections and prepare for the session. She was empathic of our experience and it was comforting to know she was there if we needed her. We would recommend her to our friends without hesitation."
Bridget, June 2025

"Lexie helped me to stay calm with practical and emotional support. From answering messages, keeping tabs on the contraction timings and giving nudges when it was time to act. It was great to have someone on our side while dealing with the chaos. We were really impressed with her knowledge, understanding and cool head. It has been a huge relief having someone we completely trust with Frank, that has our best interests at heart and we know we can lean on for support. It has made a massive difference to our first few weeks as parents. "
Tom, June 2025

"Alexie is an extremely kind and sensitive person and became like a family member to me, it was easy to trust her. She was an incredible help to me, she was with me throughout my labour, helped me control my breathing, gave me massages, brought me food and water, was very sensitive to me, encouraged me during my efforts and I am infinitely grateful to her. She is always ready to help. It so happened that my son and I ended up back in the hospital with a suspected infection, Alexie helped us with our things, brought them from my house to the hospital, and also constantly supported and worried about us. And for that I thank her."    V.S

“During pregnancy, Lexie checked in with me regularly and took me through the stages of labour in detail. She showed me helpful positions for labour, and a breastfeeding tutorial before the birth.
Lexie was amazing from the moment early contractions began, to getting to the hospital, she supported us.
She got to the hospital in no time and began to soothe me as we waited for triage. She could see the level of pain I was in and the contractions and was determined that I wouldn’t get sent home. Thankfully we were admitted to the birth centre.
She continued to soothe me via massage and encouraged me with affirmations.
My birth didn’t go to plan and I had to have an emergency C section and every step of the way Lexie made sure I understood that I knew exactly what my options were, what was happening, and I felt I had a voice to make my own choice.
For the past two weeks since my labour, Lexie has constantly checked in and has been there around the clock to answer every question I’ve had. She has shown us the utmost respect, love and care. I’ve been happy and content with the help I’ve received and I’m grateful to have Lexie in a time when we really needed her.”

“I couldn’t be happier. This process would have been very different had we not had Lexie to advocate for us. I learned how to soothe my wife and how to count her contractions. It could have been an overwhelming process but actually it was very calm, despite the emergency c section.”

“Alexie is passionate, incredibly honest (she keeps it real!), and kind. From the moment we arranged our birth preparation sessions with her, she was an incredible source of support, always on hand to answer my questions and offering a wealth of knowledge on pregnancy, birth, and beyond. In fact, she taught me more than any of my midwives, doctors, or group antenatal classes.
The sessions she did with my husband, Nick and I, were amazing. She delivered the information so clearly and in such an engaging way, which was so important as it was Nick’s first real insight into what birth would bring. It really got him thinking about what’s ahead, sparking great discussions between us and giving him the confidence to help me make important decisions—he’s even gone off to do his own research since! Alexie is an incredible support, and I couldn’t recommend working with her more highly.
