Beverley Samways

Birth & Postnatal Doula

Hey there lovely, my name is Bev and I love all things pregnancy, birth and postnatal! I’m guessing that the fact you’re here means you're either pregnant, or just had a baby, either way - congratulations! Before I get to know you, let me tell you a little about me and my journey to becoming a birth and postnatal Doula...

Giving birth to my son in April 2014 was a life-affirming experience. Since then, I've championed 100's of couples as they prepare for birth. As a birth Doula, I've supported many couples at the birth of their baby.

I have deep love and respect for Hypnobirthing - not least because I found the techniques helpful during my own labour and birth. I have extensive experience in guiding parents to use deep relaxation and breathing techniques, affirmations (words of encouragement) and physical movement during labour/birth. I can share knowledge of comfort measures that may benefit and support your birthing choices. In my experience, the use of Hypnobirthing techniques can often lead to lower intervention rates and negate the need for medical pain relief. However, my role of supporting you can take many forms, and I will always support your birthing choices without criticism or judgement.

Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, every pregnancy and birth has a significant impact on the woman, her partner, and their baby. It is my hope that you and your partner feel confident, calm and in control of your birth experience, freeing you to really enjoy the magical moment when you meet your baby for the first time.

My personal postnatal journey was a rocky road. I struggled to breastfeed for weeks and my baby had an undiagnosed tongue tie, which lead to a short stay in the special care baby unit. I have no doubt that my early experiences of parenthood would have been greatly improved by the presence of a postnatal Doula. As a postnatal Doula myself, I've supported many parents as they navigate those early days, weeks and months of family life. Some families require just a little helping hand for the first few weeks, while others need a pillar of strength throughout a much longer postnatal period. Every family is unique, and yet, a majority of families benefit from the same things... non-judgemental support, information without opinion, a listening ear, a helping hand, someone to rely on. Whether I'm with a family for just a few weeks, a few months or even a year, my focus is always to build the parents' confidence in their own abilities, so they no longer need me. Then I know I've done a good job of supporting them.

For over 10 years I’ve built my life around caring for, encouraging and supporting people through their own pregnancy, birth and parenting journeys. If you've enjoyed reading about me and are considering me as your birth and/or postnatal Doula, please get in touch. I'd love to hear about you, your journey so far into pregnancy, birth and parenthood, and your needs for support during this special time. I look forward to hearing from you!

Warm wishes, Bev
