I am married and between us we have 6 children and 3 grandsons. I became a Doula after I witnessed the birth of my grandson and I realised that women need to feel empowered in order to have a positive birth experience. Somehow society has lost touch with how wondrous birth is. There is a place for medicine in birth, but in the majority of cases it is at the back of the room, ready to be called in if needed. The birthing person has all the skills needed to bring their child into the world, and a Doula’s job is to ensure they have all the information they need to gain confidence, knowledge and self-belief…and at the time when its most needed practical support and care.
It is the same with postnatal support – reassurance, information and support go a long way towards ensuring new families become what they want to be. With me as your postnatal Doula I can help with feeding, either the baby or you, or give you a break to have a shower or sleep. I am happy to carry out almost any household task that will help give new parents the time to adjust to their new life – though my car maintenance and pavlova-making skills leave a little to be desired. 🙂
I trained with BirthBliss Academy – the brilliant Kicki Hansard and love every aspect of my job. Doulas reduce your risk of intervention, increase your chance of a positive outcome, provide you with all the information you need to ensure you are in control of your decisions and are able to allow your body to be in charge of the birth, in fact your body and your baby, as they work in harmony together towards ta common goal.
I have worked with a variety of families, including those blessed with twins, and have attended both hospital and home births. I’ve also supported births virtually which is a challenge but nonetheless effective. I have worked overnight as a postnatal doula giving parents some much needed sleep, and I have conducted birth preparation sessions and postnatal debriefs.
I have also taught hypnobirthing as I am a qualified Hypnobirthing practitioner and am able to help you throughout any lockdown as I have fully adapted my course – both group and individual – to be completed over Zoom, and all handouts etc either personally delivered to you or sent by post. I LOVE hypnobirthing, and you will too! I can now also do 3 Step Rewind if you have had a previous birth and feel that some fear resolution would help you.
Doulas can, will and do provide support whatever the circumstances.
