Claire Dugan

Birth Doula

As your doula, I prioritise building a strong connection between us as a trusted birth team makes all the difference in your experience. I will guide closely and unpick your vision for the birth of your baby, ensuring that we explore your preferences thoroughly and work through any concerns together so you feel nurtured and fully supported. I provide you with a comprehensive array of resources and 1:1 guidance both in person for our sessions together and via phone calls and messages thereafter, creating a holistic level of support where you can both feel safe and empowered. I was born in North London and have lived here most of my life. I am a mother of two girls, age 12 and 9 and we live in Winchmore Hill. Areas covered: North Middlesex Hospital, Barnet Hospital, Edgware Birth Centre, The Whittington, The Royal Free, Whipps Cross, Princess Alexandra and Homerton Hospital. I also support parents wishing to birth at home and work closely with the home birth teams to ensure you have the best care and support. I hold a full and up to date Peadiatric First Aid Certification and an Enhanced DBS with Mini First Aid. This is important to me to feel secure when caring for both mothers and babies during birth and beyond.

With years of hands-on experience as a hypnobirthing coach and birth doula, I offer calm, compassionate support throughout your pregnancy and birth. I take the time to truly understand your vision for birth and to explain your choices, guiding you towards your preferences, creating a space where you feel safe, heard, and empowered. Through gentle guidance, relaxation techniques, movement, positioning and nurturing touch—like massage and essential oils, if you wish—I help you both to feel confident and at ease. Together, we prepare for a birth experience that feels positive, supported, and uniquely yours.

Hospital Birth Testimonial

"Claire exudes warmth and friendliness. She immediately made me feel comfortable and that I could trust her. She is not judgmental at all and is willing to support different types of birth preferences. When we first met Claire, she seemed so excited about birth and made us both feel heard. During our other meet ups, we felt that Claire became a close confidant. She oozes confidence, warmth and happinesses. I felt that she could be a strong birth advocate that would work well with different midwives/personality types. She also assisted us with our questions that we had regarding different hospitals and any questions we had after midwives appointments. Claire also knows how to use different birth positions, oils/massage and the Rebozo to encourage babies to get into easier birth positions"  Kate and Adrian

Home Birth Testimonial

Almost a birth story "Claire was essential to our amazing positive birth. She felt like an extension of our family. As soon as labour surges started she was happy to support us through calls or texts. This type of support was extremely helpful to my partner and helped him feel supported. There is so much to do during a home birth and he knew that he would have trusted support no matter what, because Claire was on hand. As soon as the surges were every five minutes we called Claire to come to the house. As soon as she came I felt so relaxed and at ease. I had coped really well up until that point but was starting to get in a rut and tired. Claire helped our labour, applying massage (which felt amazing on my back), helping me keep calm and breathing, assisting me to try different positions (as well as the pool and shower), reminding me to drink/eat and go to the toilet when I forgot, and even helped take photos and videos of the experience. There was a point when I thought the surges weren’t progressing and Claire was able to make a plan with the midwives to help my labour forwards. We tried different birth positions and the Rebozo, which helped the baby move from back to back. At this point, I was 5 cm dilated and Claire asked me to try to have a shower and then do side lying positions to rest a bit. This was just what I needed, within 15’ I felt the urge to bear down, and then with gas and air I slowly breathed my baby out. During the whole process Claire used positive affirmations and helped ensure my partner also had the space to support me. My baby came out with no tears, completely to plan, and I felt so calm and supported. Claire helped ensure my partner caught our baby and then quickly ensured I was able to get skin to skin and transition to the birth pool for the birth of the placenta. I felt so calm, supported and affirmed in this golden hour and the placenta came out within an hour. I really feel this is because my birth environment was respected by Claire. The lights and voices were kept low, I got to have skin to skin and enjoy the natural relief from the pool. Afterwards Claire, helped us get out and when our cord turned white my husband was supported to cut it. Claire helped me to bed and we all cuddled as the midwives and her helped clean up. Claire made sure we felt comfortable before she left and that we had enough private time. Overall, Claire was an essential part of our extremely positive and affirmed birth of our daughter.

I have had the privilege of supporting all kinds of births, and every journey is different.  I’m experienced in working with second-time parents who may have had a difficult first birth. With my trauma-informed training, I will guide you to process, heal, and feel less apprehensive for your next birth. Birth is a fresh start every time, and my role is to make sure you feel prepared and ready for whatever comes next, not forgetting the birth before but moving on positively.

When I’m not supporting expectant families, you’ll find me co-hosting A Mother Space which is a super supportive (and sometimes hilarious) event and gathering space for new and expectant mums to retreat, chat, share, and just be with others who get it. We meet every other week, and it’s all about keeping it real, offering advice, and creating a sense of normality in a time that can feel overwhelming. Plus, coffee and cake is always involved!

If you’re looking for a doula who’s warm, approachable, and dedicated to supporting you in whatever way you need, I’d love to be part of your journey.
