About Me
My name is Fiona and I live near Towcester in Northamptonshire with my husband Jamie, three boys, born 1999, 2001and 2005 and my Whippet.
I trained as a Norland Nursery nurse in 1985 and particularly worked with mothers and newborn babies at home and at Queen Charlottes Hospital in London.
A few years later I had a change in career and trained in fashion design. I then worked in the fashion industry for Amanda Wakeley for seven years and then had my own design business. I loved the creative side of working. In addition to my own business, in 1997 I joined with The Baby List Company to set up Babylist Maternity Wear with them, designing a maternity wear collection which we sold from their showroom in London.
I then married my husband Jamie who was in the British Army which meant a lot of moving and also living abroad. I had my three boys and loved and still love the experience of being a Mother.
When I had the boys It would have meant so much to us to have had a doula as one thing I missed was the support of another woman by my side particularly during the birth but I didn’t know about doula’s then!
As we were abroad so much we were often with other families in the same situation without family and support close by. We all helped each other and it was then that a friend mentioned doula’s.
When my husband left the army and at last, we were in one place, I decided that I could begin my doula journey and so I did The Birth Bliss Aspiring Doula Foundation Course in September 2016.
To have the support of someone gentle, kind and non-judgemental who understands and listens to you, guiding you through this special but sometimes confusing time can make such a difference.
The calming and supportive presence of a doula really can help a mother and parents have a positive labour, birth and overall experience and through physical and emotional support they are able to make their own choices and feel in control.
It is so important for women and their partners to be treated with understanding, kindness and respect. Parents need to be listened to, reassured and given the help to find the information they need so that as far as possible the experience they wish for antenatally, the birth and once the baby is born is what (as far as possible) they would wish for and they are able to cherish a meaningful and positive memory of birth.
As a birth doula I would visit you several times before you have your baby and build up a relationship with you and your partner, giving you as much support and evidence based information that you need through the visits, e mail and the phone. Together we would discuss and look at all the various ways that your partner and I can support you throughout your labour.
I will always respect the choices that you make and the birth you would wish for whether this be in your home, birthing centre or a hospital, a natural birth or caesarean and if the situation changes as sometimes it can then I will always be there to support you.
During your labour I will be with you to provide emotional and practical support to you and your partner and I will stay by your side throughout the labour and birth. When your baby is born, I will be with you until you are settled and if possible after your baby has had their first feed and you feel ready for me to leave.
I visit you once you’re home to discuss the birth, make sure you are managing and give you any other support you feel would be helpful.
As a postnatal doula I would be with you for a minimum of 4 hours a day for 2-5 days a week and help you settle with your new baby. I can guide you with feeding whether this be breastfeeding or formula and make sure you get enough rest while I’m with you. I can look after siblings, light housework and help you establish new routines. My aim is to help you adjust to becoming a parent of your first, second, third….. baby with all the help and support you need so that you are able to enjoy this time.
I do also offer doula support overnight.
For postnatal work I will travel up to half an hour and as a birth doula up to an hour away. However please do ask if you are unsure as in certain instances I can travel further.
I have experience of new born babies both multiples and premature babies from being a mother myself, a doula and a Norland Nursery Nurse.
I offer advice on equipment and can provide you with a list of essential and non-essential items for your baby and I can also offer advice on Maternity wear and styling.
I do also offer ‘Freezer Filling’ service, filling your freezer with delicious food before the birth ready for once you have had your baby and your hands are full.
Please contact me if you would like any more information and to check if I am able to cover an area that is not mentioned on my listing.
I look forward to hearing from you.
