Hello, I’m Josephine- a birth, antenatal, loss & postnatal doula based in Hove, East Sussex.
I am the person holding you and your birthing partner through pregnancy, birth and beyond. I do this through educating you and your birthing partner about your rights (from pregnancy to birth) and delivering antenatal education; Also in more practical ways, such as being an advocate during your birth, protecting your space, but also through physical touch, making suggestions or breathing along with you during your labour. I am passionate about birthing people’s rights in maternity care, and absolutely devoted to my client’s advocacy. I would love every person to feel empowered to birth, having learnt about their body, their choices and rights. My role is therefore to bridge the gap between consultants- guided by the NHS guidelines and pathways- and the interest of the birthing person and partner, who have a right to a positive birth experience, one that respects who they are and what they would want for themselves and their baby. I endeavour to help you through one of life’s most significant times.
As parents-to-be, I prepare and support you practically and emotionally, for anything that may come your way, during the birth and the postnatal period, whilst enabling you self-exploration and personal growth. During your birth, I can also be your voice when you don’t have the words necessary.
As a postnatal doula, I can support you through the initial weeks with feeding through the ups and downs of baby’s changing patterns of his/ her development. More importantly, I can help you to get some rest and feel a little more “normal” again, by providing that breather space during my visits, when I can take over the load of caring for your baby (and household).
I can also support you during the night. Before becoming a doula, I facilitated spaces for women having experienced a baby loss or pregnancy loss. Having worked for the Sussex Maternity Systems (NHS England), I have a concrete insight of all maternity services and their current challenges (including the impact of the Covid pandemic). I also have a rich network of birth professionals that can support us outside of our work together. I am a trauma-informed care provider. I am a qualified meditation teacher (Level 6) specialised in trauma recovery and trained in TRE (Trauma Releasing Exercises). If you are interested in developing hypnobirthing and meditation skills with me, I would be glad to support you. I am spiritually minded (practising Buddhist, raised Christian), and although I choose to operate a secular service and birth practice, it is completely safe to engage with me on that realm.
I have worked with birthing people from all walks of life and circumstances, including single mothers and same sex couples.
Whoever you are, I would want the birth that is right for you and no one else. You have my unconditional/ non-judgmental support (within our agreement). I offer a free initial consultation so that you can assess whether I would be the right doula for you.
