Josipa Smith

Mentored Birth Doula

It’s a privilege to be considered to walk alongside you during this transformative time - my intention is to ensure you feel nurtured and empowered every step of the way. It’s important that we both feel at ease and aligned as we step into this journey together - send me a message, and I’ll be in touch to arrange a chat :)

I’m experienced birth and postnatal Doula, and pregnancy and postnatal Yoga teacher. I live in Haringey, North London, with my husband, our two teenage children, and our dog.

I believe every birth has the potential to be a positive, life-affirming experience. I’m here to offer compassionate, non-judgmental support and help you and your partner discover your strength and confidence as you welcome your baby.

My passion for all things pregnancy and birth began with the births of my two children, and experiencing the incredible support of a doula during my second birth.  Those experiences were transformative - two very different births, but both empowering, thanks to learning about birth physiology, my birth rights and choices, and surrounding myself with the most incredible birth support team. I want you to feel just as nurtured, supported, and confident during your own journey.

The body undergoes extraordinary, intelligent changes as it creates, nurtures, and holds space for new life. As your doula, I will hold space for you with compassion and without judgment. I won’t tell you what to do – I’ll provide a safe, supportive space where you can explore what feels right for you and your family. I’ll share evidence-based information along the way to help you make informed choices, empowering you to approach this transformative time with confidence and clarity.

Birth is unpredictable, beautiful and wild –  I'll by your side every step of the way, helping you feel safe, heard, and prepared for however your birth unfolds. I’ll help you advocate for your choices and support you in trusting your intuition as you welcome your baby.

A bit about me:

I grew up in a beautiful Croatia by the sea, but have lived more than half of my life in North London.

Coffee is a daily essential –  love the ritual of making a fresh brew in the morning, than sitting in quiet and enjoying it.

Cooking is my zen! I’m a massive foodie and love trying out new recipes. I’m particularly fond of curries.

I used to be an extrovert and always had a massive fear of missing out. In the years since I had my children, I have learned to love and crave my own company.

I love the practise of yoga. Not just the movement, but the opportunity it gives me to reflect and for the quiet it brings to my mind – essential when life is crazy busy!

My children are my world and I am super proud of kind, compassionate and loving people they are growing up to be.

My 4 year old dog Alba is my best friend.  She is utterly gorgeous and gives the best cuddles. And makes me laugh out loud, a lot.

If you feel drawn to me and think we’d make a good team, reach out and we can arrange a time to chat.

TESTIMONIALS

Jos supported us with our home-birth of our daughter in December 2024. We wouldn’t have felt confident to have a home-birth without her support. She was very calm and reassuring throughout in the lead up and preparation, and in the birth itself. I don’t think I would have managed a VBAC2 without her so I’m very grateful.  Jo & Beau

Jos was recommended by many members of my local community and she supported me and my husband as a birth doula. She met with us few times before the birth and was always available on the phone or txt.

Jos has proven to be of huge help to us many times along the way – whether in providing antenatal education, pointing to the right information and latest research, being a voice of reason and talking options through on many occasions where I had to make difficult decisions. She has great knowledge of the maternity system and was very helpful in choosing the right hospital and birth team to support the birth I wanted.

Jos is very knowledgeable, compassionate, helpful and supportive of one’s birth wishes and choices, regardless of what they are. She meets one at where they are in a very non-judgmental way.
In my pregnancy and birth journey I faced many challenges, twists and turns and Jos helped me navigate through these with ease and confidence.

I am so grateful I had her on my birth team, as she brings the expertise, the woman’s wisdom and the unique support that birth partners simply aren’t equipped with.
I would absolutely have Jos as my doula again and highly recommend her to anyone, whatever their pregnancy and birth preferences are.  Diana & Lotfi

We started working with Jos early on in our pregnancy journey and she has been an invaluable support throughout. Given neither me or my husband are from the UK, we felt like we needed support from someone who knew the system and was able to guide us through the multitude of choices you are faced pre and during birth and we couldn’t have asked for a better help/support. Jos is very empathetic and she would always guide us through different scenarios without judgment but supporting us with her knowledge and by sharing a lot of resources that would help us make more conscious choices. Despite not having the birth we had planned for, I had a wonderful labour experience thanks to the support that Jos had given me and my husband pre birth and during the actual labour. I also love the fact that Jos is a yoga teacher and supplementing the one to one work we did together with her yoga classes created a wonderful bond between us and a 360 help throughout my pregnancy. Jos is a fantastic person and professional and I couldn’t recommend her more!  Ceci & John

Jos was a fantastic doula- she provided resources and information on all different scenarios of labor and birth. The knowledge I gained from Jos made me feel empowered and ready for my birth.
Jos was incredible during my labor- she ensured my birth plan was followed and respected. She also encouraged me to labor as much as I could from home, which meant by the time I got to the birth centre I was 7cm dialated. I couldn’t recommend Jos as a doula enough and we look forward to having her support us hopefully for our second baby :)  Chloe & Marlon

Jos is a fantastic doula and I’m so glad she was part of our pregnancy and birth journey. She is easy going, down to earth, understanding and so knowledgable. She understood us and our birth preferences and was always on hand – both in person and on the phone – to answer any of our questions or ease our worries. The resources, information, podcasts and knowledge she provided us with were so valuable, especially as this pregnancy and birth had a number of scenarios and issues that we weren’t expecting and hadn’t experienced with our first baby. Having an independent third party to turn to, to ease my anxiety and to hold my hand throughout was so important to me and I don’t know how people manage the journey without it! I cannot recommend Jos highly enough.  Jennifer & Guy

My wife and I would highly recommend working with Jos as a doula. We had a great experience in preparation for birth, during labour and beyond. In particular, we’d highlight the breadth of her knowledge, understanding of the local NHS trust, the incredible judgement she had during labour and openness to all kinds of questions. Overall we had a very positive birthing experience and Jos was an integral part of making that a reality.  Jonathan & Gosia

Jos really helped me achieve the home birth that I wanted. It was a very positive experience. She was a calming influence and made me feel supported during my labour. Having a successful home birth allowed me to bond immediately with my baby. I’m very grateful to Jos for helping me achieve this and for being part of it.  Camila & David

Jos is a warm, compassionate doula without whom we would not have had our lovely home birth. Jos’s support was invaluable during pregnancy, labour and post-birth. Jos helped us navigate the maternity system in the NHS, provided us with books and suggested reading and pointed us in the direction of other resources. As a yoga teacher, Jos was great at suggesting helpful exercises to prepare for birth, during labour and now postnatally.  Laura & Chris

From the moment I met Jos I felt so at ease with her. She empowered me to have the birth I wanted and provided the most invaluable support.  Clare & Chris

Jos was an incredible doula to us for the birth of our first child and we can’t imagine the birth of our daughter without her. As two non-native Brits (American/French) we felt so supported by Jos, who has overseen many births in all settings across NHS trusts and who herself has navigated the NHS as a mother. She made us feel empowered and prepared for all the eventualities of birth and alleviated our nerves about labour and delivery far away from family. She is incredibly professional, providing the latest in research and advice which helped to inform our birth preferences. She never pushed an agenda, but gave us the tools we needed to feel to advocate for the birth we wanted, inform decisions that would arise, and embrace birth as it comes. On the day, she was with us from home to hospital and her calming presence definitely contributed to our smooth birth experience. She is amazingly personable and builds strong relationships with her clients through great communication in-person, over email and text – she is readily available to answer questions and chat as things come up. From our first meeting we had a natural connection – like an old friend, and she gave us confidence that everything would be alright no matter what, which is the best place to start. She feels like part of the family now and we’ve loved keeping in touch in the first weeks and months with our newborn. We can’t say enough good things about our experience with Jos and we will definitely be using her again when we next expand our family!  Taylor & Ben

My husband and I knew we wanted to work with a birth doula when I became pregnant because several studies show a large and positive impact on birthing outcomes. Jos was my pre-natal yoga instructor during my second and third trimester, and I knew immediately upon meeting her that I wanted her to support us during my birth. It was the best decision we made. My husband and I both looked forward to our pre-natal sessions with Jos during which she talked with us about our fears and reservations, recommended excellent reading materials, helped us refine and finalise our birthing preferences (by modelling different scenarios), and encouraged us to prepare for the immediate post-natal period. Jos was kind, responsive, well-informed and supportive of our preferences, needs and expectations throughout our journey together. While my daughter’s birth did not go according to “plan”, I feel very positive about the experience largely because I had incredible support from Jos and my husband who worked together to create a calming birthing space, provide constant support and encouragement, and advocate for me when difficult decisions needed to be made. Jos played a vital role in keeping us calm and grounded, and without her experience and insight, I have no doubt I would feel differently about my birth story. For that, I am forever grateful and would highly recommend working with Jos. I hope we will remain in contact for years to come.  Meghan & Paul

Jos was such a godsend for my pregnancy and birth experience. She guided us through putting together a birth plan, gave great recommendations for reading materials/research, and taught us exercises to practice in pregnancy and during labour. I wanted an unmedicated water birth so all this preparation was so helpful! I also attended her prenatal yoga classes which were fabulous and full of breathing techniques and movement helpful in labour. She was also a great coach for my husband—he felt more prepared to cheer me on (like an athlete!) and not fear what was to come. When the big day finally came, Jos was a rockstar. I called her when I went into labour—she was a great sounding board about what to do (sooo helpful when you can’t think straight!). My labour came on fast, so she met us at the birth centre. Once there, she was an amazing support and advocate. The midwives came and went from the room a lot, but Jos was by my side the entire time. It was like having the world’s best maid of honor. She knew exactly how to help: offering me snacks, water, gas+air (ha!), a helpful hand to the toilet, and a reassuring presence during the intensity of the surges.

When the midwives said they’d leave me to labour for three hours, Jos gently encouraged them to check me again. I’m glad she did because I was already 8cm! Jos was also excellent at encouraging my husband to be more confident as my birth partner. Because she was there modeling how to support, and encouraging him to join, he soon felt comfortable to be right in the action. Before long, our sweet girl was born in the water! I had such a magical birth story and I attribute a large portion of that to Josipa’s support leading up to and through the birth. I felt prepared, supported, and empowered. We would 1000% recommend Jos—and plan to call her again if we have more children in the future.    Laura & Ryan
