Becoming a birth and postnatal doula has been a natural progression from teaching hypnobirthing and pregnancy relaxation, which I have been doing since 2016. Over the years I have seen and felt a need to offer more in-depth support to growing families. I truly believe that the transition to parenthood is such a monumental period in life and its gravity is so often overlooked and portrayed unrealistically. When a baby is born, so is a parent, and a family – there is so much learning involved for you all.
My main aim is to nurture this period, to love and care for you, encourage you and share information with you so that you can grow and flourish in your new role. As your doula I will provide bespoke care for your specific needs and situation, support the type of birth you choose to have and give the postnatal assistance you and your family desire. I put a huge emphasis on you being able to make informed choices about your care pathway so together we will spend time exploring your birth options and defining your intentions surrounding your labour and postnatal period.
When you choose me to be your birth doula I will be on call from the 39th week of your pregnancy until your labour occurs. In the lead up to this period we will meet and communicate regularly to establish what your expectations are for our relationship. During your labour I will be on hand throughout to provide emotional and practical support to you, and your birth partner, in your chosen place of birth. This can include setting the scene for your birth environment, preparing a birthing pool, liaising with your midwifery team, assisting you with finding comfort in your labour positions, and holding space for you and your baby.
Postnatally, my core purpose is companionship. Let’s remember that the simplicity of hot tea and a listening ear can do us the world of good. I will also gladly make meals to meet your healing and nourishment needs - I particularly enjoy the adventure of new recipes and cuisines and am partial to a bit of baking too. I will take care of you, your family and your home by way of sleep support, minding baby for you so that you can take some time to yourself or some light cleaning, laundry or tidying. I can also signpost you to local resources that may be useful to you. For example; feeding support groups, carrying consultants, local parent and baby classes, and postnatal and newborn health practitioners.
