Hello, I'm Rebecca, and I've been supporting families through birth, breastfeeding, bonding and the fourth trimester for over four years.
I take a mother-centred approach and am here to support you with your choices for pregnancy, birth, feeding and nurturing your baby. What does this actually mean? Well, in a nutshell, it means that I recognise that you are beautifully unique and I will tailor my support to meet your needs! I will listen to you and your hopes, dreams and fears about birth and motherhood (offering support and guidance, never judgement). I practice a holistic approach to support: our life (and even generational) stories, experiences, and traumas come with us into birth and motherhood. It's so important you feel seen, heard, supported and nurtured.
I have experience supporting families through different birth and postnatal journeys including homebirth, hospital birth, induction and caesarean. I can support you whether this is your first baby or your fifth baby. I also have experience of birth after birth trauma, birth after sexual trauma, and birth after previous pregnancy loss.
Birth Doula
As your birth doula, we will meet together to discuss your birth plans and how I can best support you (as a family if you have a birth partner and children already). You have the option of doing a hypnobirthing course with me, and I can offer sessions for relaxation and encouraging baby into the most optimal position using rebozo techniques. I will be contactable should anything arise during your pregnancy where you need support, and can provide evidence-based information, tips and experience throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. During birth my support can be very varied - no two births are the same! I will protect your birth space and work alongside your birth partner if you have one. I could be helping you with breathing, maintaining pool temperature, keeping your birth space quiet and sacred, liaising with midwives, helping you encourage baby into an optimal position, making you snacks, offering tips should things not be progressing as you would like, and supporting you should birth take a different path to the one you planned. I may do all or none of these things - you can ask me for support during your birth, or I will instinctively fit in with what's happening. After birth I will protect your space, help you with breastfeeding, and ensure you are settled with baby.
As a birth doula I will visit you once postnatally and offer support via phone/whatsapp for six weeks postpartum.
Postnatal Doula
As your postnatal doula I will support you during your precious postpartum period - emotionally, physically and practically. Support during this time is so very valuable - I still feel so grateful for my own postnatal doula! I will come to your home and offer guidance on postpartum recovery, with feeding your baby, with understanding newborn behaviour, encouraging you to tune into your own mothering instincts, cuddling baby while you nap and shower, and supporting YOU (and your partner if you have one) emotionally as you process birth and adjust to life with a newborn. I can also help with light household chores and helping look after older children.
The postnatal period can be a crazy time - hormonally, emotionally and physically! It's beautiful and scary all at the same time. You deserve rest and support at this time so that you can focus on yourself and getting to know your baby.
My Journey to Becoming a Doula, Training and Experience
I think as a doula, it's important to share how I got here to see if I seem like a good fit for you and your family. Becoming pregnant and giving birth to my daughter (now 8), completely changed my life and set me on this path to helping other families through the rollercoaster experiences of pregnancy, birth and parenthood! In 2020 I qualified as a hypnobirthing teacher. I have since qualified in breastfeeding support and founded a thriving breastfeeding group, I'm a 3 Step Rewind Practitioner specialising in birth trauma, and completed my doula training with Red Tent Doulas. I have done many CPD courses to be able to support your birth, including biomechanics for birth, trauma-informed birthwork, and pregnancy after infant loss. I have an enhanced DBS and am training in paediatric first aid. I also run a non-profit called The Nest Holmfirth which supports families from pregnancy through to preschool.
I've supported hundreds of families with their pregnancy, birth and postnatal journeys. It would be a privilege to support you as you make this journey as a growing family. Outside of the birth and baby world, I love song, dance, music and spending time with family. Please do get in touch with me for an informal chat to see if you think I'm a good fit for your family. I'm also happy to provide references from families I've supported.
