Sarah Newman

Mentored Birth Doula & Mentored Postnatal Doula

Hi, I'm Sarah, a full-spectrum doula & hypnobirthing instructor covering Hertfordshire and London. I'd love to support & educate you to get the empowered, magical birth you deserve!

Hello, I’m Sarah, a birth & postnatal doula and hypnobirthing instructor based in North London. Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy or the arrival of your little one! This is such an exciting and transformative time, and I’d be honoured to be a part of it with you.

As a birth and postnatal doula, I serve families in and around Hertfordshire & London, providing the compassionate, continuous care and support that every parent deserves. I’m here to offer you a comforting presence and hand to hold, whether you’re preparing for birth or navigating the early days with your newborn. My goal is to empower you with knowledge, reassure you with encouragement, and ensure you feel supported every step of the way.

As the medical world continues to play an increasing part in birth, with women feeling less in control of their own bodies, and the lack of the ‘village’ community around to support them, having a doula is the best thing you can do to feel in control, educated and empowered to get the birth that you want.

Birth education is a huge passion of mine, which is why I started teaching Birth Preparation Classes. I believe that if you know how physiological birth is supposed to flow, how the body works through biomechanics and how outside aspects can affect both of these, your likelihood of having a smoother, less-painful, minimal intervention and more enjoyable birth is so much higher. I LOVE teaching parents and seeing the difference it makes when they're fully educated, aware of their options, and empowered to trust the mother's body. In the classes we also cover how the partner can best support the mother, how to navigate the medical system, and very importantly (and often overlooked!), the postpartum period.

About Me…

I’ve always been obsessed with the human body and mind as a child, studying biology, chemistry and psychology A-levels, hoping for a career as a doctor, but instead I followed my super organisation skills, and became a Executive Assistant working in London for 15 years. Unsurprisingly, I felt like something was missing and I wasn’t doing a job that was the real ‘me’. I decided to leave the city job, overhaul my life, and discover what I really wanted to do. Over the next few years I began training as a psychodynamic counsellor, travelled Europe, went to India to do my yoga teacher training, studied massage and herbal medicine in Bali and spent a year living in Australia (yes I know, typical Eat, Pray, Love).

Along the way, someone mentioned doulas to me and I realised this was the job for me! A role where I could bring together all the things I love and am passionate about, supporting and empowering women, helping families emotionally and physically and creating amazing community support systems around them.

In 2023 I completed my Intensive Doula training course with Nurturing Birth, and in 2024 completed a hypnobirthing course with The Calm Birth School.

My focus...

Within the birth space I’m extremely interested in perinatal care within different cultures, homeopathic & herbal medicines, nutrition, childhood development, and parental mental health. I love to travel around the world picking up cultural practices from different communities, and in early 2025 spent a month studying Ayurveda for pregnancy & postnatal in India.

I’m also extremely passionate about reducing the numbers of unnecessary inductions and caesareans within the birth system, and exploring all the ways we can do this (hiring a doula & education being the main ones!).

As a doula I’m here to support you through whatever type of birth YOU want, empowering you to make your own decisions and feel ready to take on whatever your birth will bring you. I fully believe your body is more capable than you could ever imagine, and I’m here to help you realise that.

Postnatally I really focus on ‘mothering the mother’ – when all eyes have suddenly gone to the baby, I’ll be there to make sure you are getting looked after, with proper nutrition, rest, massage, a tidy house, and someone there to cry and laugh with along the way.

If this sounds like the care you’re looking for, please get in touch – I can’t wait to meet you.
