About Me
My Name is Uduak Udondem, I live in North West London with my three children.
I am fortunate to love the work I do as a Birth Doula, supporting and being an advocate for women to deliver their baby(ies) into this world safely and confidently.
There is nothing more important than knowing that mothers and babies are given all the opportunities and knowledge to have a healthy pregnancy, safe labour and birth, and for them to be able to embrace the joys of this new chapter for themselves and their families.
Becoming a doula in 2006, really came out of my own birthing experience – the differences between my first birth in a Birth Centre to a homebirth preparation and labour; exploring alternatives to the traditional antenatal classes lead by midwifes which meant working intuitively, choosing the right support people, applying complementary medicine, herbs and the power of breath for labour.
Although all this initiated my journey into motherhood in an empowering way, what seeded into me the importance and power of the right kind of support was my mother’s presence at my first birth. Her calmness and stillness around the turmoil and craziness of my labour, I still remember now. In my work, the presence of a doula is just as powerful as having the right tools to apply.
My mother became pregnant with me in Ghana. Miles away from her mother, family and friends in Nigeria. She befriended a woman shortly after her arrival with my father in Ghana. Her name was Uduak and she supported, cooked and just was there for my mother in her time of need, during her pregnancy, labour and birth. I also feel that the support my mother was given during her labour and my birth was a key example of what she received and passed on.
My experience as a birth Doula has taught me lessons of listening, supporting and understanding how to remind the pregnant woman of her power and strength she holds in her birth as well as the challenges she could face and how to manage them. Every woman needs something different from a doula, my role is to provide the vital elements to each mother and more.
Gradually, I combined other therapies to my doula services: Pregnancy massage and Arvigo Therapy.
I grew to understand the importance of how touch therapy can be very powerful in enhancing our human experience of womanhood and motherhood, bringing healing, cleansing, connecting and nurturing in our lives.
I stepped back from my work as a Birth doula in 2014 to prepared for motherhood for the 3rdtime.
In 2015 I had a wonderful homebirth, and started my postnatal period with a lotus birth. Another way to slow down and connect in a way I hadn’t before. I was learning not be ‘superwomen’. I began to understand and really appreciate the need for practising self-care in my postnatal period and why it was so important at this time.
I am very fortunate to be connected with traditional birthing and postpartum stories and knowledge from my mother and elders around me. I learnt and understood the benefits of postpartum techniques such as belly wrapping and yoni steaming to enhance healing and bonding. I have furthered my knowledge in these areas from other cultures to gain a wider skill set to best provide my clients with pre-pregnancy, and postnatal wellness.
Your birth outcome.
All women’s pregnancies and births are unique and different. Yet, I have come to understand and feel we are all the same in our needs and wants to feel confident, safe and connected and ultimately have the best experience ever.
I have worked in various kinds of birth settings – inductions, Caesareans, Water Births and also prepared and supported women to give birth at home. I have even experienced delivering a baby on my own! Birth is unpredictable in its results and the most important thing is to be prepared, experienced and knowledgeable to provide the best outcome.
I have worked in various hospitals and Birth Centre’s across London: Queens Charlottes, Royal Free, Chelsea & Westminster, St Mary’s Paddington, University College Hospital, Whittington, Whipps Cross University Hospital, Kings Hospital, Guy’s & St Thomas Hospital, Central Middlesex. Also supported families in Surrey for homebirth and birth centres.
