About Me
Hello! I am Maisie – birth doula and childbirth educator. I am the mother of 2 children (now aged 11 and 12) and along with my partner (and various animals) we live in Deal, East Kent.
My passion for birth work ignited after my own empowering experiences of childbirth. Looking back, I benefitted hugely from having an optimistic and informed female friend around me during my first pregnancy. She herself had birthed a number of times, and provided me with a perfect balance of information, inspiration and support – long before I had heard the word ‘doula’.
I was immediately aware, post birth, of the positive impact my birthing experience had had on my body, state of mind, relationship with my partner and ability to cope during the early days of motherhood. This lead me to want to support other women and couples to have their best possible birth experiences, and in 2014 I embarked on my first doula training (with Olivia Seck, Birthing Wisdom). Looking for further resources, techniques and tools with which to support expectant parents lead me to train as a hypnobirthing teacher with The Wise Hippo (accredited by the Royal College of Midwives) in 2017, and later to train as an independent antenatal educator (Dani Diosi). This educational aspect informs and complements my doula work.
Particularly for those who would like to prepare for and experience a physiological (‘natural’) birth, I have created a 7 week program of online modules containing everything expectant parents will want to know in the run-up to their birth (the best birth project). The bite-sized online sessions are punctuated with bespoke face to face (zoom or in-person) support to consolidate learning and foster a sense of excitement for the chapter ahead. My doula clients have inclusive optional access to this program which gives them a flexible and evidence-based platform for their preparation. This means that our doula sessions are free for fluid and individualised support, without the pressure of having to get up to speed with all the information families need to feel ready for birth and the postnatal period.
I feel very privileged to support individuals and couples preparing for their births and early parenting, to tap into their own instincts and resources, whatever circumstances surround their pregnancies and whatever choices are right for them.
Prior to starting my own family, I worked for 10 years as a criminal barrister in Manchester. Although there were elements of the job I found rewarding, it was far from capitalising on my best skills and qualities which are way more aligned with the roles of nurturing and providing holistic support to new families. Having said that, I enjoy feeling confident in advocating for my clients, albeit in a non-adversarial manner which encourages the best outcomes and relationships for the families I support.
I would be delighted to discuss your wants and needs, so please get in touch to see if I am the right doula for you. Thanks 🙂
