I have been working as a post natal doula for a year now and believe I have absolutely found my calling.
I feel that it is imperative for woman to feel nurtured as mothers, especially in those first few months. Being a post natal doula is to actively hold a space for a new mother to talk, reflect and process, hour by hour, day by day, by listening and paying attention. Having someone who can empathise on a deeper level, at this sometimes vulnerable time, is precious, and to have this kind of fairy godmother arrive regularly at your home and care for you, is a bright ray of light when things may feel challenging.
Through my work I offer a safe space for a mother, and her family, to bond with baby, adjust and rest. I like to think I offer a splash of a favourite aunt and a best friend, doing what they would do; nurturing, nourishing and physically making the mother a cosy nest to just be, so she is able to recharge and refill her cup, and really cherish the first weeks of being a new Mummy.
I have trained in bone closing massage, post natal mental health, baby wearing and breast feeding support to further my development and enable me to support postpartum mothers as fully as possible. I am always learning and am excited to discover other skills.
I run regular monthly Mother Space groups from my home in Guildford, for mothers and babies six months and under. It is a beautiful homely space in a converted barn, to connect and talk through any areas that can concern new mothers and where they can find reassurance, comfort and drink a hot cup of tea (and munch on some homemade cake!)
I nannied all through my teens and twenties and was a personal assistant in the film industry before becoming a mother myself. I have a young daughter and I love travel, yoga, walking, dancing, singing, movies and recently have started pastel drawing classes. I am highly efficient, organised, positive, pro active, gentle and kind. I have a deep passion for babies, children and caring for others and I have a wealth of experience signposting and supporting people going through vulnerable times.
Aside from my doula work, I run a support group for people recovering and adjusting to life again after cancer treatment. I, myself, have had breast cancer three times. I host workshops offering a special space to put ourselves first and focus on self care, providing tools for stress management, trying new therapies, exploring more holistic options and taking a pro active approach to our future emotional, physical and spiritual health.
‘Sam is a natural born doula. She is kind, generous, thoughtful, wise and so easy to spend time with. As our postnatal doula Sam regularly turns up with a green smoothie, her signature energy balls (so yum), a thoughtfully chosen book and the most wonderful laugh. It’s impossible for her not to lift your spirits, even after the most sleep deprived night. She’s also a fabulous cook, highly professional, organized and proactive. I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is a true gem.’ – Elle
‘The ‘closing the bones’ was like no massage I’ve had before. Not only has it helped heal me physically but I feel emotionally and spiritually too. After what has been a hugely difficult time, being gently rocked was incredibly soothing. The massage made me realise I hadn’t touched or treasured my tummy like I had in pregnancy, even though it had once held my precious baby girl. Sam used a short meditation, crystals, smell and music to enhance my experience further and in the comfort of my own home, in the exact place I had birthed my baby, which only made it more special.
Thank you for making me feel renewed and restored Sam.’ – Vicci
