About Me
I am Sam. I am a postnatal doula working in Guildford, Godalming & Farnham and the wider Surrey area.
When baby is born, a mother is too.
My work as a postnatal doula is to support a mother as she rests and bonds with her baby, holding a space for them to adjust so they can prioritise their own physical and emotional recovery.
I am here to offer reassurance, a non judgmental, patient ear and an encouraging voice for them, and all the family, as they adapt and grow in a safe space where they can all reflect, process and heal. Having someone who can empathise and listen on a deeper level, at this particularly vulnerable time, is vital, and when I arrive at a clients home, I will bring homemade treats and smoothies so breakfast and feeding snacks are all sorted! Postnatal care is nurturing, nourishing and physically creating a comforting place for a mother to just be, as she recharges and cherishes the first weeks of being a new Mummy.
I am another pair of hands to cook, hold baby, help with light cleaning and keep the household thriving. I am trained in postnatal massage, post natal mental health, baby wearing and mindful breast feeding support. I offer post natal planning sessions, ante natal support, postnatal preparation sessions where I can stock the freezer and become familiar with a clients home and older children, and I offer an invaluable check in service at pivotal points of the first six months and up to babies first year, which can be incorporated in the full sessions or as separate sessions.
I run regular monthly Mother Space groups from a gorgeous new venue just outside Farnham, for mothers and babies six months and under. It is a beautiful homely space in a converted barn, to connect with other local mums, talk through any areas that can concern new mothers, relax, share and find reassurance, comfort as well as drink a hot cup of tea (and munch on some homemade cake!)
I am thrilled to be a Developing Doula companion, the Guildford Doula UK rep and I work with the amazing voluntary organisation Home Start Godalming.
Babies, children and caring for others brings me so much joy and I have a wealth of experience signposting and supporting people going through vulnerable times. I am always learning and thrive on working with all sorts of mothers, families and parents. I am highly efficient, organised, positive, pro active, gentle and kind.
It is my priority to nurture confidence in my clients to focus on their own self care and how best to give themselves permission to rest and nurture their physical and emotional wellbeing during the fourth trimester. I offer a variety of different packages and flexibilities, so clients can decide what works best for them and their individual needs and financial circumstances.
I nannied all through my teens and twenties and I was a personal assistant in the film industry before becoming a mother myself. I have a tween age daughter who keeps me on my toes and I love travel, yoga, walking, dancing, singing, movies and writing, keeping a monthly blog on my MummaBaby Space website.
Recently, I have started offering unique specialised support to any families and new parents effected by cancer, chronic illness and corresponding treatment. I have had breast cancer four times in the last sixteen years. Until recently I organised group workshops offering a special space for survivors to focus on self care, providing tools for stress management, trying new therapies, exploring more holistic options and taking a pro active approach to future emotional, physical and spiritual health, as well as connecting with other patients and survivors.
While I endeavour to charge a slightly deducted and reasonable price for this specialised service, I am also happy to discuss prices for anyone experiencing financial hardship at this time. Please message me directly.
TESTIMONIALS
‘Sam is one of the warmest, kindest, calmest people you will meet. She’s perfectly suited to being a postnatal doula – she has a wealth of information to tap into, whilst at the same time listening to you and what you need, and honouring the way that you want to be as a mother’.
– Sarah and baby Zac
‘Sam has been a great support during my second breastfeeding journey. From general help and reassurance with latching and positioning, to troubleshooting the various challenges that have cropped up along the way – including tongue tie, managing a fast let down, and helping me through periods where my supply has dropped, she has always been a calm and reassuring support. She was also able to signpost me to other helpful resources when I was particularly worried about my supply, and thankfully we got things back on track. I have also really enjoyed embracing the closeness of the breastfeeding relationship with my daughter during the breastfeeding meditations we have done.’ – Emma and baby Lottie
‘During lockdown the video calls were invaluable. My son was born early during lockdown and we ended up staying in hospital for six days due to breathing difficulties where he had to be put onto oxygen in special care. I had a very emotional chat with Sam from the hospital and it helped so much. We had weekly zoom check ins and these were incredibly helpful. Things change so much during those early days and it helped me hugely to be able to voice my feelings, concerns and give them room to breathe. Sam has also provided amazing practical help as well as emotional support from a postnatal doula – it can honestly make the world of difference in those early days.’
– Sarah and baby Harry
‘Ive never heard of a space that is just for the mum and thats not a baby group where its often competitive chat about what the babies are doing. Its refreshing to be in a safe place where you can be open and honest with how you really feel as a mother the ups and downs and not feel judged by anyone there. Sam has welcomed us into her cosy home which feels a home away from home with beautiful candles, blankets, cushions and homemade treats. We’ve meditated, laughed, cried, listened, shared, comforted and been creative. It has given me more than I thought it would including some wonderful friendships.
– Vicci and baby Isla
‘Sam’s postnatal massage was like no massage I’ve had before. Not only has it helped heal me physically but I feel emotionally and spiritually too. After what has been a hugely difficult time, being gently rocked was incredibly soothing. The massage made me realise I hadn’t touched or treasured my tummy like I had in pregnancy, even though it had once held my precious baby girl. Sam used a short meditation, crystals, smell and music to enhance my experience further and in the comfort of my own home, in the exact place I had birthed my baby, which only made it more special. Thank you for making me feel renewed and restored Sam.’ – Vicki and baby Ben
