We received the sad news yesterday that Marshall Klaus, who (with John Kennell) conducted clinical trials on the medical outcomes of doula-attended births, and adopted the term ‘doula’ to refer to a person providing labour support, has died.
In addition to his work for DONA International and in neonatal research, Marshall Klaus also authored several works, including Bonding, Care of the High Risk Newborn, and Mothering the Mother – a book that continues to inspire many to become doulas. We extend our sincere condolences to fellow DONA International founder, Phyllis Klaus, and family.
